Catheter care is typically performed before and after the cleaning of the rectal area. This timing is important because it helps maintain hygiene and prevent infection—especially considering the proximity of the catheter to the area that can harbor bacteria. Proper catheter care involves cleaning the catheter site according to established protocols to promote health and prevent complications such as urinary tract infections.

Performing care only after eating or on a weekly basis does not address the regular and consistent maintenance needed for optimal hygiene. Additionally, timing catheter care in relation to meals does not recognize the critical nature of maintaining cleanliness before and after significant hygiene tasks. Regular assessment and prompt cleaning as necessary around the catheter are vital for the patient's health and comfort.
